The popular 9 girl group SNSD released a mini album on the 29th, getting ready to seize command of the music world for the summer. SNSD has released their title song ‘tell me your wish’ on the 22nd online. Also, from the 26th to 28th, they have appeared on KBS 'Music Bank', MBC 'Music Core', and SBS 'Inkigayo', performing ‘Tell me your wish’ along with the choreography to the audience.

With the previous mini album and their title song ‘Gee’, they have set the unprecedented record of 9 consecutive weeks on the #1 spot for Music Bank, and was the most downloaded song for the first half of 2009. Album sales also exceeded 100k.

Thanks to the record-breaking performance of ‘Gee’, much attention is being paid for SNSD’s new album. We observed how SNSD is appealing to their fans with charms that are different than that of ‘Gee’.

Music

‘Tell me your wish’ is being appraised as a contemporary pop / dance song that is full of beat. Many comment that this song is well-suited for the passionate season of summer.

The fact that SM entertainment’s chief composer Yu Youngjin along with Yu Hanjin and European composer team ‘Dsign Music’ came together to create this one song has been the basis of good appraisal.

However, the song ‘Tell me your wish’ lacks the hook-style characteristics compared to ‘Gee’ which continuously repeated ‘gee gee gee gee’ and ‘baby baby’. This resulted in some fans pointing out that ‘Tell me your wish is ‘less addicting’ and ‘harder to grasp’.

Nevertheless, this ‘unnoticeable’ weakness does not pose a problem upon SNSD, as they are already experiencing explosive popularity for ‘Tell me your wish’ from its fans.
Pre-sales of the new mini album has already reached 80k. Also, ‘Tell me your wish’ has sustained its top spot for most downloaded song for over a week since its release.

Choreography

The main difference between Gee and Tell me your wish is that the movements in ‘Tell me your wish’ are bigger and broader. If the side-way walking ‘Crab leg dance’ was the capture point for ‘Gee’, then the capture point for ‘Tell me your wish’ is overall synchronization and balance.

The seductive arm & hand movements, broad leg movements, and flexible hip movements are placed throughout the song. The quick kicking motion of the leg is already being called ‘the shuttle-kicking dance’ and is gaining massive popularity.

These big movements in ‘Tell me your wish’ are being appraised as ‘refreshing’. Many fans agree that to enjoy this song to its maximum potential, one must watch the choreography while listening to the song.

Stage Costume

During the comeback stage of SNSD at 'Music Bank', they wore Marine-style jackets with short hot pants. They changed the hot pants into mini-skirts during their performance at 'Inkigayo'. Overall, the fashion of SNSD is being appraised as ‘well suited for summer, refreshing but at the same time with intense sensation’.

These costumes indicate that SNSD have become more mature than when they were performing ‘Gee’. In fact, six of the nine members have celebrated their 21st birthday, which is the legal age in Korea.

Now, the concern is whether if SNSD will be able to reanimate the scorching storm of ‘Gee’ with ‘Tell me your wish’, equipped with new music style, choreography, and costume.

I like this article. Im kinda tired of alot of people going "its not as catchy as gee" because its kinda stating the obvious and the song is great even without the hooks and shows that snsd's songs are popular not only because its got hooks and has that repititive 'gee gee gee gee' thing going on.

Even thought it may not be as catchy as Gee, it's still good a song.
I think SNSD will be able to create another storm even though it's a less catchier song and has less catchier choreography.
Since it's a new style it has already caught alot of people's eye's and ears, so I think they will do well.
I'll ship TaeYang and Yuri.

I'm seriously addicted to not only the song but also the dance. The song is definitely different from their song previously and both gee and genie got their own style and i like both. The dance looks fantastic to me and not to mention they look gorgeous to me too. Hopefully this song will be another reanimate the scorching storm of â??Geeâ??. SNSD fighting.

I've had a similar impression when I saw the music video for the first time. On its own merits the music by itself is enjoyable, well written, and very well performed and produced, and I'll continue to argue that Genie has its own hook in its pre-chorus theme that sounds very Michael Jackson-ish. But when I finally saw the music video, the music coupled with the powerful and intricate dance choreography truly came to life. Tell Me Your Wish is a very strong live performance song for the girls and I'm very happy that they have it as part of their repertoire.

I believe that the part "gee gee gee gee, baby baby baby" has a very cutesy sensation that keeps listners want to go back for more of their adorable yet good vocals. Also, the crab movements are well suited for the song's theme.

SM has done well to fit both the songs with the right Choreography. :D

"Tell me your wish" has a different style of addiction, in which you have to watch the MV while listening to the track. Which afterwards even while listening to the song, keeps you wanting to watch the MV again and again due to their wonderful leg movement which never fails to capture me with their slim, lean legs.

yup! thts the difference! genie is not considered as a hook-style song! tht is why people need time for them to get used to Genie!
Gee lifts up ur spirits...while Genie just makes u want to go hit the club!... LOL~ so i cant really pick b/t the two.

â??the shuttle-kicking danceâ?? is the name of that enticing leg movement! lol!
but either way! GENIE will surely create a big wave! but not as phenomenal as GEE! ^____________^

thnks for posting! ^^

haha.. genie maybe not as cathcy as gee but im very addicted to the song..
at first when i see the genie MV, i was shocked coz the choreography n everything r different from what i was expected...
tbh, i was kinda dissapointed.. but as i watch n listen to the MV again n again, im addicted to the dance..
its very refreshing n somewhat unique n different...
i hope genie will create a "genie craze" altho i think it cannot beat "gee craze"...
gud luck to these girls!!

although 'tell me your wish' does not have the hook element, it still makes me listen to it again and again.
its an awesome song though its harder to sing along as compared to gee.
soshi can dominate even without hook songs.
go soshi! :D

LOL, good read.

there is no doubt that TMYW will redefine Gee popularity to a greater height.

The song is addictive and so does the dance.

Both 'Gee' and TMYW have their own catchy part,

each has their distinct moves which captivate the audience.

Love both of them

yup! I agree with this article, cause gee is more happy and it is cheerful. But Genie shown hot dance and little bit change their image. I think SNSD will Hit again in this song, especially 1 year later, it is a good song! and allt of the song is a great song!^^

I was proud of SME to give an not addicting song to the girls, they could have gone the easy road and made Gee 2, easy song, easy choregraphy but they didnt.

Genie is a great song, especially because its not addictive and they dont repeat a thousand times the same words. That alone seperate them from other female groups who are still doing addicting songs.

and of course, the girls are just too hot in this concept! ^^

I agree with this article about the differences and it was pretty hard to get addicted to Genie unlike Gee which got me on the first listen

'Tell Me Your Wish' is a song with a pretty good impact. Because of this song, I'm not missing 'Gee', so I guess that has to be a good thing : )

Songs of the ilk are not my favourite genre, but I like this song!
